There will be zero tolerance for suppliers who flout consumer protection rules, Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten is quoted as saying in Saturday’s edition of l’Echo newspaper, Belga news agency reports.

“I had a meeting with the Energy Ombudsman on Thursday,” the minister explained. “He noted that some suppliers are using every opportunity that presents itself to change rates or contracts, including illegally.”

“An example? When you move out you are supposed to take your contract with you, but some suppliers use the opportunity to change the customer’s rate,” she added.

“Every infraction must be reported immediately to the Economic Inspection Service,” she stressed. “There will be no question of discussing anything whatsoever in such a crisis, with prices so volatile. The rules are there to protect the consumer. They need to be respected.”
