It may be the start of the summer school holidays, but more than 1,000 French-speaking school students in Brussels and surroundings still have no idea where they will take up their studies in September.
Exactly 1,022 students of an age to go to school have no school to go to when term begins in September: 688 in Brussels, and the others in the communes around Brussels and in Wallonia.
The situation in French-speaking schools, according to the non-profit asbl Elèves, has been only slightly alleviated by the opening of four new schools for the return to class in September.
At secondary level however, more than 1,200 places remain open in secondary schools in Brussels itself from September.
And while the number of students till not allocated a place in Brussels is lower now than at the same time last year – when the figure stood at 1,196, a spokesperson for the non-profit told La Libre, “There nevertheless remains a problem for children and parents who have been placed on a waiting list at the start of the school holidays.”
