Belgium should consider returning to 'code orange' on its coronavirus barometer in this stage of the pandemic, according to a report of the GEMS experts advising the government.

The experts are taking this stance because the pressure on hospitals has steadily been going up for a month now, not only due to Covid-19 but also because of many flu cases. 'Code orange' not only means that there is an "increasing pressure on the healthcare system" in Belgium, but also that a number of measures are needed to reverse the trend.

In practice, this would mean that people would be required to once again show a valid Covid Safe Ticket (CST) to gain access to bars, restaurants, cinemas and gyms, and that the number of attendees allowed at events would also be limited again. The face mask would also be required beyond public transport to most indoor public places again.

Politicians, however, are reportedly very reluctant to step the barometer up a gear, and are not in favour of tightening measures again, let alone re-introducing the much-contested Covid Safe Ticket.

Still, GEMS chair and infectious disease expert Erika Vlieghe stressed that "when the situation is like this or getting worse, you have to be consistent, of course."

The Consultative Committee will meet again on Friday 22 April.

I guess we will find out then. What do you think? Let @Maajtee know.
