The Flemish government has released 3 million euros for the creation of a mobile abattoir inspection team, the regional minister in charge of animal welfare, Ben Weyts (N-VA), announced on Thursday. The team will be made up of 25 people, who will be able to carry out random checks 24 hours a day on 70 abattoirs in the north of the country from the beginning of next year at the latest.
At the present time, abattoirs are checked by the FASFC's veterinary inspectors who concentrate primarily on meat quality, Ben Weyts explained.
The mobile team of inspectors will be concerned exclusively with animal welfare.
