The Verviers Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced a man in his twenties to 26 months in prison for harassing his former girlfriend.

On 5 January, the two young people met in the Carré, a festive district of Liège. At around 08:00 a.m. the following day, they quarrelled near Pepinster station. The victim reported that her ex-partner pulled her by the hair and hit her.

The police intervened and the young man was questioned, then released, but banned from approaching his girlfriend.

The police were subsequently called five times to the home of the victim and her mother in Spa. The accused had gone as far as climbing over a neighbour's fence to bang on the door, and had also harassed the young woman on the phone.

The young man claimed that he “just wanted to get (his) things back,” but his explanations did not convince the court. He was given a 26-month suspended prison sentence.

The court did not find him guilty of assault and battery, for which he was also being prosecuted.
