Belgium will offer €75 million in development aid to Burundi over the next five years, primarily supporting agriculture, health, and education under their first bilateral development programme since 2015.
The conclusion of the programme was announced on Tuesday by the office of Development Cooperation Minister Caroline Gennez.
Burundi’s Vice President, Prosper Bazombanza, also confirmed the €75 million pledge from Belgium on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported.
Belgium's government suspended some development aid to Burundi in 2015, following violent episodes there after the re-election of President Pierre Nkurunziza. Despite this, most ongoing programmes continued, added the office of Ms. Gennez.
The new cooperation agreement does not aim to revive projects halted in 2015.
It emphasises good governance in sectors supported by Belgium - agriculture, health, and education - and emphasises the strengthening of civil society organisations and citizen initiatives.
