Civil servant accused of embezzling funds from green certificates in Wallonia

An official in Wallonia's public service is suspected of embezzling funds from the sale of green certificates, Sudinfo reported on Wednesday.

The official worked in the Office for Sustainable Energy Promotion, responsible for the management of green certificates, which are issued for the sustainable generation of energy.

The suspect allegedly manipulated the encoded data, resold the certificates, then lodged the proceeds in different bank accounts to avoid detection by the computer system or colleagues.

This fraudulent activity lasted several months, before coming to light at the end of 2023. When the fraud was discovered, the official was immediately suspended and the Namur public prosecutor’s office informed. Legal proceedings are now underway.

While the exact amount of the embezzled funds remains uncertain, estimates suggest a figure between €100,000 and €150,000, according to Sudinfo.
