A court in Charleroi has sentenced Anis A. to three years in prison and fined him €8,000 for possessing and selling cannabis and cocaine, and using his vehicle to resist arrest.
On the night of 25 to 26 October, the 29-year-old defendant, driving a stolen Seat with a stolen registration plate, refused to cooperate during a police check in Marcinelle, Charleroi.
In a bid to get away from the police, the suspect drove onto the pavement, striking a police vehicle. He then attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended a short distance away. He was found to have discarded eight packets of cocaine during his failed escape, although he denied they were his.
On 9 December, the defendant was found in possession of two packets of cocaine and cannabis in Jamioulx prison. The prosecution argues the drugs were provided by a visitor. Anis A. told the court he purchased them inside the prison. He said he had hidden the drugs because he did not trust his cellmate. “That’s why I had the four packets in my underwear,” he claimed.
The prosecution asked for a minimum prison term of three years for Anis A., given his criminal record, while the defence called for a suspended sentence.
