A light sports plane crashed on Friday evening in Hasselt, near Heidestraat, killing a female passenger on board.
Emergency services were swamped with calls from nearby residents who witnessed the plane plunging to the ground.
Two people were reportedly inside the craft when it descended. Pieter Strauven, the Public Prosecutor, urged onlookers to keep outside the secured perimeter around the plane wreckage.
Confirmation came through at 20j20 that one person had died.
“A man and a woman were on board, with the male pilot injured and now recuperating at Jessa Hospital, in a state of shock. The woman, a passenger, tragically lost her life,” the Prosecutor said.
The Federal Aeronautical Search Service and the Limburg Federal Judicial Police laboratory have been summoned to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Additionally, a forensic doctor has been tasked to unravel the exact cause of the fatality.
