Heavy storms are expected to hit the country, particularly the southeast of Belgium, on Saturday evening, warns the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI).

A yellow storm alert will be in effect from 5 pm in the Luxembourg province, upgrading to an orange alert between 10 pm until Sunday 9 am.

Yellow alerts are also anticipated from 7 pm in Namur province and from 9 pm in Liège province, lasting until Sunday morning.

A rainfall region will hit the southern part of the country in the evening, spreading over the three southeastern provinces.

Average accumulations of 20 to 40 litres per square metre are likely, with localised peaks reaching 50 l/m², or even slightly more.

Strong gusts and hail may also occur under the first storms, mainly in Luxembourg province. In this same region, accumulations could exceed 60 l/m², or even more in places, adds the IRM.

The storms will move eastwards to Germany on Sunday morning.

These rainfalls may also be present in the centre of the country during the night, however, “their intensity will be less strong, currently not justifying a warning,” the MRI clarifies.
