Three young people – two 16-year-old boys and a young adult – were injured in a stabbing in the East Flemish city of Sint-Niklaas on Wednesday evening. One of them is in a life-threatening condition. The brawl was reportedly about money.
Three minors got into an argument in a pub on Schoolstraat in Sint-Niklaas at around 21:00 on Wednesday, several local media reported. The discussion escalated onto the street. The young man – aged 18 or 19 – tried to intervene, but the argument resulted in a stabbing.
One of the younger boys and the young man sustained serious injuries and were found lying on the street by passers-by, who called medical services and police. The emergency services treated them at the scene before transferring them both to hospital. The older person is in a life-threatening condition. The third person was also stabbed but suffered minor injuries.
A 17-year-old suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by police. He will appear before the juvenile court on Thursday, the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed to Belga News Agency.
The people involved in the fight told police that the discussion was about €90 that the offender had allegedly borrowed from one of the victims. Instead of repaying the borrowed money, the 17-year-old pulled out a knife and lashed out.
