A Belgian motorist lost his life in an accident in Fréthun, a commune in the French department of Pas-de-Calais, on Monday evening.

The motorist, a 27-year-old Belgian, fled after an encounter with the gendarmerie conducting a routine check in Audreselles, a commune between the coastal towns of Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer explained Guirec Le Bras, prosecutor of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Initially, the man appeared to comply with the police check but suddenly fled and evaded the gendarmes’ attempts to stop him. He was later located in Calais, where he again escaped apprehension, even after authorities deployed a spike strip to disable his vehicle.

According to the prosecutor, three police vehicles then pursued the suspect at what was described as a “moderate speed.” However, the driver suddenly accelerated, entered a roundabout, and lost control of his vehicle. The fire brigade reported that the car collided with a high-voltage pylon. Upon arrival at the scene, the driver was pronounced dead by emergency responders.

Details on why the man fled remain unclear as the French Gendarmerie conducts an investigation into the incident.
