Belgium's trade union federations have announced the organisation of a 'day of action' on Friday 13 December in connection with the ongoing government-formation negotiations at the federal level.
In a joint press release issued on Monday, the CSC, FGTB and CGSLB said the day of action was meant to "increase pressure" on the negotiators so that "priority is given to fair taxation."
During the day, a rally will be held on Place Poelaert in Brussels, with speeches and entertainment.
The common trade union front believes "workers and their families must not foot the bill for the budget deficit" and is therefore calling for "fair" tax measures. Other actions may follow, it says.
The unions' announcement comes at a time when the parties in the so-called ‘Arizona’ coalition continue negotiations, more than 150 days after the elections, on a majority agreement and the formation of a future federal government.
The prospective coalition members are the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA), Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V), Vooruit, Les Engagés and Mouvement Réformateur (MR) parties.
