The Abbey of Vlierbeek in Kessel-Lo (Leuven) is celebrating its 900th anniversary this year.
Although the site has not housed a monastic community since the late 18th century, several cultural events will be held to mark this milestone.
The festivities will include exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and guided tours.
Founded in 1125 as a Benedictine priory under the Abbey of Affligem, the Abbey of Vlierbeek was established through a donation from the Count of Leuven.
One of the highlights of the celebration will be a Eucharist on 2 February, which will be broadcast live on VRT.
"The 900th anniversary of the abbey is more than just a number," said Leuven’s councillor for heritage Dirk Vansina. "It bears witness to a long history of religion, culture, and community."
