Belgium is now a full member of the Nuclear Alliance, bringing together European countries that want to promote nuclear energy, Federal Minister of Energy, Mathieu Bihet (MR), confirmed.

The Nuclear Alliance was founded on the initiative of France in February 2023 to promote nuclear energy as a pillar of the energy transition alongside renewable energy at the European level. Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden were its initial members.

However, since 18 February 2025 Belgium has been added to the list, leaving behind its status of mere observer. "By turning the page on decades of hesitation, Belgium has today chosen to be a leading player in European nuclear power," said Bihet, speaking of "a real paradigm shift in Belgian energy policy".

"This endorsement reflects our desire to strengthen existing partnerships with our European neighbours and to position our country as a key player in the achievement of the European Union's energy and climate objectives."

In concrete terms, Belgium will cooperate on projects that focus on a European framework favourable to developing nuclear energy; new nuclear infrastructures; access to both public and private funding; developing skills, and strengthening industrial collaborations.

Nuclear power is recognised as an essential component of the energy mix "to ensure massive, controllable and affordable electricity production without resorting to fossil fuels".
