Rail traffic was disrupted on several lines in Belgium on Thursday morning due to damage caused by strong gusts of wind.

Notably, traffic was interrupted on the high-speed line between Liège and Leuven.

“Due to a tarpaulin stuck in the overhead lines, traffic is currently at a standstill in both directions” on that line, a spokesperson for railway network manager Infrabel said on Thursday morning.

A tree had also fallen on the tracks at Walcourt, impacting trains between Charleroi South and Couvin. While traffic could resume around 7:30 AM, “delays and cancellations are still possible,” the spokesperson added.

Furthermore, a broken down train at Mechelen disrupted traffic between Mechelen and Dendermonde.

Gusts of wind of up to 100 kilometres per hour are expected on Thursday.
