A 41-year-old man who bit off part of a police officer’s ear in Cologne, Germany, has been sentenced to four years in prison and must pay the 26-year-old victim €30,000.
The suffering caused is “hardly surpassable,” stated the president of the Cologne regional court on Friday, calling the incident an “extremely serious crime.”
The man was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and assaulting public officers.
Although the piece of ear was initially reattached to the officer, her body eventually rejected it. She faces lifelong consequences from the incident, according to the court.
She may never be able to work as a police officer again due to severe trauma.
The man confessed to the actions and apologised, claiming he had no recollection of the event because he was under the influence of cocaine.
The policewoman and a colleague had wanted to check him after he had attacked two passers-by for no reason and scratched their faces with a key. But the man immediately attacked the two officers. It was only after they called for backup that he could be subdued.
