Seventy-nine people were arrested overnight from Sunday to Monday following unrest in Paris after PSG’s Champions League victory, according to Paris Police Prefect Laurent Nuñez.

Around 01:00 individuals identified as not being Paris Saint-Germain supporters used barriers to block the ring road for about 15 minutes before returning to the Champs-Élysées, where some fired fireworks and attempted to vandalise shops, the police prefect told RTL radio.

"We made 79 arrests," he stated, adding that calm was restored around 03:30, calling the number of arrests "unprecedented" for the weekend.

On the previous night, from Saturday to Sunday, 563 individuals were arrested, including 491 in Paris. Of those, 307 were placed in police custody.

In total, more than 5,000 police officers and gendarmes were deployed in the capital throughout the weekend.

France’s celebrations of PSG’s historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Munich were marred by tragedy, as a young man in his twenties died after being hit by a car while riding a scooter in Paris.

In Coutances, in the Manche region, a police officer was injured in the eye by a firework and has been placed in an induced coma.
