The Flemish Student Association is calling for more neutral terminology to replace "labour market-oriented finality" and "B-stream," which are perceived as stigmatising and disconnected from students’ experiences, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

Based on classroom discussions with students from various schools across Flanders, the association has issued a 17-page advisory report. These discussions revealed that many students still find the term "B-stream" highly stigmatising, despite the earlier removal of labels like ASO, BSO, TSO, and KSO to combat stigma. Additionally, students feel entirely disconnected from the term "labour market-oriented finality."

The organisation also advocates for the elimination of the so-called "waterfall system." They recommend students choose educational paths based on their talents and abilities, rather than their limitations as indicated by B-certificates with restrictions. They further suggest easing the conditions for transitioning from labour market-oriented final pathways to general or dual-purpose education paths.

Surveyed students expressed a desire to spend more time in actual work environments. They urged for increased partnerships with businesses and future workplaces, requesting internships throughout their education, not just in the final year, and more influence over potential internship locations.

Lastly, students pointed out that vocational pathways often come with high costs. They welcomed the current minister’s indication in the policy note (2024-2029) to allocate additional resources for the more expensive pathways to ensure they remain affordable for all.

The association collaborated with schools such as De Toren van Babel (Ghent), College Ten Doorn (Eeklo), Don Bosco Groenveld (Leuven), GO! Atheneum Geraardsbergen, and PIVA (Antwerp).
