The fourth edition of German Language Week will take place across Belgium from 6 to 12 October, offering events for everyone from young children to adults, organisers announced on Monday.

The programme will include film screenings, readings, guided tours, and more, aiming to highlight the importance of Belgium’s third national language.

“More than 130 million people speak German worldwide, and it is one of Belgium’s national languages,” said Martin Kotthaus, Germany’s ambassador. “German is highly sought after as a professional language globally. Learning German is truly worthwhile! But more importantly, we want to show that learning German can be fun and open up new horizons.”

The organisers added, “It doesn’t matter if you’re just beginning to learn German, have some prior knowledge, are a professional, or if German is your native language. Everyone is welcome and will be actively involved.”

The initiative is a collaborative effort led by the German Embassy, the Goethe-Institut Belgium, the German-speaking Community of Belgium, and the Belgian Association of Germanists and German Teachers (BGDV), among others.
