A person drowned on Friday evening in a pond near the Atomium in Brussels, despite rescue efforts by emergency services.
The Brussels fire brigade was alerted at approximately 21:05 about the incident, which occurred near Eeuwfeestlaan. “There was almost no visibility, and the water was two to three metres deep,” said fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw.
Divers and a sonar boat searched the pond for an hour before locating the individual and retrieving them from the water.
Medics on the scene immediately began resuscitation efforts, and the individual was transported to hospital with assistance from a mechanical chest compression device.
Despite these measures, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. The circumstances leading to the individual entering the water remain unclear.
