This summer, a record 32,500 student workers were employed in care homes across Flanders, according to data from HR services group Liantis and care federation VLOZO.

The increase was particularly notable in August, when 11,860 students worked in care homes—4% more than in the same month last year.

Since 2019, the number of students working in elderly care has surged by over 65%. They took on a variety of roles, including caregiver, cleaner, kitchen assistant, and receptionist.

Male participation has slightly increased as well, rising from 18% to 20% of the student workforce. In total, July, August, and September saw 32,500 students working holiday jobs in care homes, setting a new record.

According to VLOZO, attracting young workers is vital for the sector’s future, as over one-third of care staff are over 55 years old. CEO Johan Staes noted that student jobs provide an important first introduction to elderly care.

The federation is calling for the continuation of favourable tax policies for student workers and for the allowance of student employment in care homes during the school year. Care homes currently receive subsidies from the Flemish government for hiring student workers, and VLOZO supports extending this measure year-round.

Additionally, VLOZO advocates for allowing students under 18 to work on Sundays. Staes emphasised that student jobs not only offer short-term support but also serve as an investment in the future of elderly care.
