The federation of food banks and its 631 affiliated local associations are launching an appeal for donations on Wednesday to add a “virtual plate” to the longest-running Christmas solidarity table.

As the festive season approaches, many people look forward to a feast with family and friends. “But for the more than 175,500 beneficiaries of food banks, it is difficult to offer a healthy meal to their friends and family, even more so a festive meal,” explains the federation of food banks.

Therefore, the organisation is appealing to Belgians who wish to make a donation of €20 and thus add a “virtual plate” to the longest Christmas table. The evolution of the table can be followed via the website www.foodbanks.be.

Requests for food aid have risen again throughout Belgium in recent months according to the managing director of the federation of food banks, Jef Mottar.

“At the moment we are meeting the needs of some 177,000 people. In the summer months of 2020, we reached a peak with up to 195,000 recipients per month. After that, the demand decreased to about 175,000 people and then it started to increase again,” he added.

These figures do not include the food aid distributed in the wake of this summer’s deadly floods in Wallonia.

In 2020, food banks and affiliated local associations collected and distributed more than 2,000 tonnes of food each month with the help of 332 volunteers and 37 social contract workers.
