On Saturday, former Defence Minister Steven Vandeput was selected by the party council of the rightwing N-VA party to succeed Lorin Parys as vice president of the Flemish nationalist party.

Vandeput was selected from among five candidates. He will now serve as deputy to party leader Bart De Wever, alongside his colleague Vice-President Valérie Van Peel, Belga News Agency reports.

The N-VA, Belgium’s largest party, was forced to choose a new vice-president by the recent unexpected departure of Lorin Parys for the Pro League.

In addition to Vandeput, who is the current mayor of Hasselt, the list included federal MP Kathleen Depoorter, Flemish MP Maaike De Vreese, and two legislators from Brussels, Gilles Verstraeten and Mathias Vanden Borre.
