When holidaymakers are away, the burglars come out to play, searching for unoccupied homes. Holidaymakers in the city of Ath in Wallonia, however, need not worry.

Local residents can sign up to request that police conduct “regular visits day and night” to check on the safety of local homes, according to broadcaster RTBF.

In the event of a problem, the police force can get in contact with any trusted person of your choice, and even deliver “surveillance reports” from police visits.

With the highest level of robberies in the EU, there may indeed be real cause for concern. Belgium has three times the number of robberies per 100,000 residents that the European average.

Local residents can express their interest in the service via the police-on-web website, or by emailing the local police force. This must be done at least seven days before Ath locals go on holiday.
