Not all Ukrainians arriving in Belgium this summer will be able to be housed, warns the Director-General of Fedasil, Michael Kegels, in an interview with Le Soir on Tuesday.
Fedasil is the Belgian state body responsible for the domestic reception of asylum seekers.
“It has become more and more difficult to find places” in private homes and in municipalities, explains Kegels.
“At the same time, we see that the emergency places created by the Federal Government to deal with extraordinary influxes are now used to accommodate people who can no longer be sent to the Regions.”

Today, between 150 and 250 Ukrainians arrive daily in Belgium.
“There is a big concern for this summer,” adds the Fedasil boss. “The host families are going on vacation. They are wondering what they are going to do with their Ukrainian families. I have no doubt that the Regions will manage to put solutions in place for these families, but what will be done with the new arrivals? Fedasil’s role is limited to allocating them a place, but what are we going to do if there are no more places?”
According to Kegels, it’s quite manageable in terms of the registration of migrants.
“We started from 2,500,” he said. “Between one-third and one-half of these people need housing. It’s a little and a lot at the same time.”
