First weekend of Summer Sales registers 12% turnover increase

Gross turnover so far for this year’s Summer Sales is over 12% higher than last year, according to a survey by the Neutral Trade Union for Independents (SNI), Belga News Agency reports.

The sales, which began on Friday, have been a “success”, after a “poor Spring,” the SNI noted.

On Friday, the union, which represents independent professionals and other small businesses, commented that the sales were off to an “encouraging” start, thanks to factors such as good weather, which encouraged people to visit stores and shopping areas.

This positive trend has continued during the first weekend of sales.

“Shopping centres, city-centre stores and retailers further away had rather long queues of waiting customers on Saturday and Sunday,” commented the SNI, welcoming the return of in-person family shopping.

“This is a very good thing for retailers in this difficult economic period,” it added. “Retailers need liquid cash to rebuild their cash flow,” after two years marked by COVID, followed by the war in Ukraine, the organization concluded
