Sixteen young teenagers who fell ill at a camp in Italy have all recovered and have returned to Mechelen and Geel.

The camp, which had a total of 30 participants - was in any event on its last day, so the young Belgians were not forced to return home early.

The 16 youths, who were about 13 and 14 years old, became unwell on arrival at a restaurant in Bergamo. Panic broke out and five ambulances were called. It later turned out that they were suffering from food poisoning contracted before arriving at the restaurant.

The Kazou youth service, which organised the boys' trip to Italy, is taking a preventive look at whether additional measures are needed in future. “Because young people do a lot of activities, it is sometimes difficult to know exactly where a problem comes from,” Kazou said.
