A World War II shell was discovered on Tuesday afternoon in the Tournai area, and destroyed without incident by the demining services of the army.

The municipal authorities and the emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were informed on Tuesday, around 3:00 p.m., that a shell from the Second World War had been discovered near the St-Luc Institute in Ramegnies-Chin, in the Tournai area.

The area’s police, emergency and demining services quickly went to the spot after the discovery of the device.

Due to the vacation period, no schools had to be evacuated.

The bomb was unearthed by army specialists, then transported to an appropriate place between Ramegnies-Chin and Templeuve (Tournai). It was destroyed in optimal security conditions.

The demining operation was completed without a hitch.
