Over the last two weekends, police in Mechelen stopped close to 1,300 drivers for drug and alcohol tests, resulting in seven drivers having their licences removed.
Police in Mechelen used a total of 1,298 breathalysers to identify drivers who were under the influence.
Seven drivers had their licences withdrawn for at least 15 days, 27 others were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, two others had taken cocaine, and two others were under the influence of both cocaine and cannabis.

Furthermore, numerous drivers who had to relinquish their licence due to alcohol or drug usage behind the wheel did not have it in their possession. As a result, their automobile was immobilised with a steering rod until the problem was remedied.
