A total of 162,000 people visited the Atomium in Brussels in July and August, breaking a record set in the summer of 2019, when 158,000 people discovered the building with the nine spheres.
So far this year, 420,000 persons have visited the landmark structure, which was originally built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair and is located on the Heysel Plateau.
”The Atomium's summer season is benefitting from the return of the foreign public, mainly from France and Germany, but also Spain and the Netherlands,” the Atomium said. Half of the visitors are Belgians, of whom 48% are from Brussels.
“After two difficult years in the midst of the health crisis, and on the eve of an important anniversary, the Atomium is continuing to build on its popularity," said Director Julie Almau Gonzalez. "The cultural and mediation projects it has developed succeed in convincing new generations of visitors.”
The digital art exhibition, 'Symbol,' is still accessible throughout 2022, she added.
