Seventeen Walloon municipalities have now been labelled "pedestrian municipalities" by Tous à pied (formerly Sentiers.be), the non-profit association announced on Wednesday in a press release.
These municipalities won one or more 'baskets' - stars rewarding their actions in favour of active mobility and the development of a network of small public roads.
The communes receiving the awards include Courcelles, Crisnée, Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, Grez-Doiceau, Ittre, Jurbise, Lessines, Mettet, Neufchâteau, Pecq, Pont-à-Celles, Quaregnon, Saint-Hubert, Thuin and Walhain. Each received one basket. Jalhay totalled three, while Chaudfontaine was awarded the maximum score of four baskets.
The Golden Basket, which rewards municipalities that have improved the comfort and safety of pedestrians on their small public roads, was awarded to the municipality of Walcourt.
By obtaining the "Pedestrian Commune" label, the 17 communes have become references in the development of networks of minor public roads and alternative mobility to cars, Tous à pied stressed.
"Mobility habits are changing, and the municipalities more than certainly have a role to play in this necessary evolution towards more active mobility," the non-profit association said.
The 'Commune pedestre' label that the municipalities have received is valid for three years.
