Belgium's Council of State has annulled the regional spatial execution plan for the new Cercle de Bruges stadium, the Council announced on its website.
The Council had noted in a decree on 6 October that the regional plan increased the space reserved for events of Cercle de Bruges from 21 to 71 hectares.
In several opinions, the competent public authorities criticised the 50-hectare extension and asked for a concrete quantification of the area required for the club’s needs.
Several parties appealed against the corrected version of the regional plan, which was adopted by the Flemish government on 22 January 2021.
The city council of Bruges then started a dialogue with all concerned in order to reach an agreement. At the end of the negotiations, the city did so with three of the four parties concerned: construction company Ghelamco, property developer Novus and Bremhove real estate agency.
All three withdrew their appeals. Only the environmental association Groen Brugge refused to comment on the matter.
