A train travelling this morning from Antwerp-Central to Dendermonde stopped for almost three hours near Beveren due to a breakdown, SNCB confirms.
The 200 or so passengers were not evacuated and had to wait three hours before being able to continue their journey.
Given that the train had lost power, SNCB decided to send a service train to the scene to tow the carriage away.
“For safety reasons, it was decided to leave the passengers on the train,” said spokesman Bart Crols. “We did hand out water and waffles.”
Because of the incident, one of the two tracks between Antwerp and Sint-Niklaas was also blocked for three hours, causing a lot of delays for other trains because all train traffic had to be done on one track.
