Two people have been arrested near Stockholm for “illegal intelligence activities,” Swedish authorities report. One of the two is suspected of spying against Sweden and another country, while the other is suspected of complicity, Swedish intelligence agency SÄPO said in a press release.
According to reports in the Swedish press, the suspects are a married couple of Russian origin.
A third person was also questioned.
Legal documents that French news agency AFP was able to view show that the alleged spying began in January 2013. SÄPO said only that the investigation leading to the arrest had been going on “for quite some time.” The intelligence agency gave no information about the identity of the duo, the countries involved or the information they collected.
The Aftonbladet newspaper described the suspects as a married couple in their sixties who own a company that specialises in electronic components.
Swedish authorities stressed that the arrests had no connection to other cases currently being handled by the intelligence services.
Earlier this month, two Swedish brothers were charged with spying for Russian intelligence agency GRU between 2011 and 2021.
