From mid-December, the intensity of LED lighting on Wallonia's highways will be reduced to 30% between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. to save energy.

The measure, which will be evaluated at the end of March, was endorsed on Friday by the board of directors of Sofico, the Walloon company for the additional financing of infrastructures.

Only lighting that works with LED bulbs will be modified. This involves a total of 50,000 light points out of 72,000. The remaining 22,000 will continue to function normally until they are replaced by LED lamps.

The measure should generate total savings of more than €620,000 per year, on top of the amount saved from turning off the lights on the median strips of highways, in effect since Sept. 21.

“Thanks to these initiatives, the total savings on the Walloon road network and the national road network will be close to €1 million per year,” Sofico said.
