The United States and Germany will supply Ukraine with armoured vehicles, for the first time, to fight Russian forces in the country. Berlin will also deliver a Patriot air defence system to Kyiv, following the American example.

This was stated by US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a telephone conversation on Thursday, according to a joint statement.

Washington will provide Kyiv with so-called Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles while Berlin will supply Marder combat vehicles. Both countries plan to train Ukrainian troops on the respective systems, the statement added.

The US announced in late December that it would supply Ukraine with a Patriot air defence system. Germany is now joining that effort by sending in the additional Patriot anti-aircraft battery.

The two leaders confirmed their further support for Ukraine’s urgent demand for anti-aircraft capabilities.

The Patriot, considered an advanced anti-aircraft system, should enable Kyiv to take down missiles and aircraft at a much greater distance than previously supplied systems.
