Human remains have been discovered in the basement of an apartment building in the Antwerp district of Deurne, local daily Het Laatste Nieuws reports, citing the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office.
According to neighbours, homeless people and drug addicts often gather in the basement where the human remains were found.
The basement is about 100 metres long and is divided into several individual closed cellars.
The police mobilised dozens of teams on the ground on Friday evening to search the entire building and question the residents.
Meanwhile, an investigating judge has been appointed to the case, examining a potential murder charge.
