Socialist Charles Servaty was elected on Monday as the new speaker of the parliament of the German-speaking Community.

He succeeds Karl-Heinz Lambertz, who had held the position since 17 June 2019.

Lambertz, who has been a parliamentarian since 1981, announced a few days ago that he would resign as speaker, but would remain in parliament until the end of its mandate in 2024.

“In 2019, I had announced that I would leave the presidency of the parliament in the year I turned 70, that is to say in 2022,” Lambertz recalled.  “Charles Servaty was to succeed me but he fell ill.”

“My resignation from the presidency was therefore postponed for a year,” explained Lambertz, who held the post of minister-president for 15 years, from 1999 to 2014.

Charles Servaty was born in 1966 and lives in Bütgenbach. A teacher by training, he joined the Bütgenbach municipal council in 1994 and, in 2001, he became an alderman, a post he occupies to this day. He has been a member of the assembly since 1995 and was head of the socialist group there.
