Work about to start on 24-km cycle route around Charleroi

The local council of the City of Charleroi approved on Thursday evening a public contract for the construction of the southern part of the future Charleroi cycle route, thus paving the way for work on this important project to begin this year.

The project, which was unveiled a few months ago, involves the creation of a 24-kilometre cycle loop around the city, linked to corridors leading to the city centre.

The southern part of the loop runs from Marchienne-au-Pont to Couillet, said Charleroi’s alderman for Mobility, Xavier Desgain. “In addition, the city has set aside a budget of some €11 million (excluding VAT) for the construction of the loop on the municipal roads."

Where the works are to be carried out, they will sometimes be on very different scales. In some places, they will consist, for example, of simply adding a cycle track. In others, they will mean a complete, facade-to-facade renovation of the roadway with the addition of a track.

“Of the whole budget, about 3 million [euros] will be for drainage repairs,” added Desgain.

The northern part of the future loop is already under study, according to the alderman.
