Thirteen blue drums of chemical waste were found on Friday in an agricultural area next to the E19 in Wuustwezel, according to the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. They are suspected of being from a drug lab.
Further analysis will have to reveal exactly what the substance in the drums is and who is responsible for the dumping.
The discovery was made on Friday morning by the Rand zone fire brigade, after receiving a report of suspicious barrels at Hollandse Weg in Wuustwezel, a remote farming area in Antwerp Province, along the E19 motorway. Some of the 13 barrels were leaking, leading the police, fire brigade and civil protection services to set up a safety perimeter around the site.
The barrels were cleaned up by civil protection after samples were taken for further analysis. Federal judicial police have launched an investigation.
