Turks are leaving their country in increasing numbers due to the economic and political situation there, figures from the Foreigners’ Office quoted on Tuesday by De Standaard daily show.
In 2022, the number of Turks arriving in Belgium to seek asylum rose to 1,721, up from 672 the previous year.
Economic migration is also on the increase – from 660 in 2021 to 1,243 in 2022 – while the number of researchers emigrating to Belgium rose from 14 to 30.
A total of 546 applicants for asylum were accepted in 2022 compared to 374 in 2021.
