A fire broke out on Sunday morning in a nursing home in Watermael-Boitsfort, a suburb of Brussels. Among the 30 or so residents who had to be evacuated, one was taken to hospital because he was suffering from CO and smoke poisoning, the Brussels fire brigade reported.
The fire at the rest home on the chaussée de La Hulpe broke out at around 03:30 on the third floor of the five-storey building. The fire brigade went to the scene with three command vehicles, four pump trucks, two ladder trucks, a ‘support car’, a decontamination vehicle, five ambulances and three MUG teams. Local police and the Red Cross also arrived at the scene.
“31 residents of the third floor were evacuated and taken care of in advance medical posts,” said fire service spokesperson Walter Derieuw. “One of them was transferred to the hospital with smoke and CO intoxication. The fire has been fully extinguished, but some rooms on the third floor are temporarily uninhabitable. The evacuated residents will be taken care of in other wings of the rest home.”
