Man arrested after synthetic drug lab raided in Flanders

A synthetic drug laboratory was discovered on Monday in Ruisbroek, in the Flemish municipality of Leeuw-Saint-Pierre, in Flemish Brabant, Het Nieuwsblad reports. This information was confirmed by the Hal-Vilvoorde Prosecutor’s Office.

A 52-year-old suspect from Molenbeek-Saint-Jean was arrested and brought before an investigating judge on Thursday.

The drug lab was set up in a shed behind a house on Gieterijstraat in Ruisbroek. How this lab was discovered by police has yet to be revealed. Investigators found six tanks containing around 800 litres of chemicals.

These products were precursors for producing amphetamines (speed) and methamphetamines (crystal meth, ecstasy). Police also found 300 kilos of raw materials for making MDMA, as well as piles of waste from its production. Civil protection was called to the scene to dismantle the lab and dispose of the hazardous waste.

“A suspect was arrested on Wednesday, he is a 52-year-old man from Molenbeek-Saint-Jean,” said the Hal-Vilvoord Prosecutor’s Office. “He was presented to an investigating judge after being questioned. The prosecution is asking for his imprisonment on suspicion of manufacturing narcotics within the framework of an [criminal] organisation.”
