Brussels' ULB university has partnered with ULiège and Lille University to launch a new European Inter-University Certificate in Media Literacy and Digital Citizenship (CEMCD).
The initiative responds to the increasing importance of media studies in today's job market and aims to address the shortage of qualified professionals in the sector.
The program is designed to equip teachers and continuing education practitioners with the necessary skills to navigate the challenges of digitisation and digital citizenship and consists of two modules.
The first module covers media and digital literacy, theoretical approaches to media education, and legal considerations. The second module focuses on implementing an educational project centred around digital citizenship, with the guidance of professionals.
Technological impact
The media landscape has been significantly impacted by technological advancements and the digital transformation of various industries. There is now a high demand for professionals with expertise in media studies, particularly those who understand digital media platforms, social media, online advertising, and streaming services. Employers seek individuals who can effectively navigate and utilise these platforms to reach target audiences.
As well as providing a comprehensive understanding of the industry, media studies focus on theory, audience analysis, content creation and media planning. This knowledge is valuable for developing and implementing successful marketing campaigns, managing public relations and engaging with customers through various channels.
Furthermore, media studies equip individuals with the ability to critically analyse and evaluate media content, discern reliable sources of information, and understand media bias. These skills are highly valued in a society that heavily relies on media for news and information.
