A man has confessed to starting the house fire that killed his two children in Puurs-Sint-Amands, Antwerp on 19 June.
The father, 34, was no longer residing with his family at the time of the incident. He had been the prime suspect in the case, accused of igniting the fire intentionally. Despite earlier denials, he was taken into custody.
During an interrogation on Friday, the man finally admitted to starting the fire. However, he insisted he did not know his children were inside the house when the fire began.
In the effort to save her children, the mother sustained severe burns and is now in a coma. Her health condition remains critical.
Firefighters managed to pull the children from the blaze, but they later succumbed to their injuries. The mother, still unconscious, is unaware of her children’s heartbreaking loss.
The investigation into the incident continues, according to the prosecutor’s office.
