Ommegang medieval festival kicks off in Brussels

The 89th Ommegang procession and festival will take place this week.

The parade will take place on the evenings of 26 and 28 June starting at 20:45 and will include 1,400 actors, folk groups, horses, and puppet theatre. The parade honours the coming of Charles the Fifth to Brussels in 1549.

The procession is two kilometres long and goes from Brussels Park to Grand Place. Brussels-Ixelles zone police are warning residents of traffic delays in the centre of Brussels as a result of the parade.

A Renaissance village and market will be open in the Royal Park throughout the weekend. In the village, visitors can see what it was like to be a surgeon or a blacksmith hundreds of years ago. There will also be jousting tournaments and battles between knights fighting on foot.

The market will be open from 12:00 to 21:00. Products made by craftsmen from all over Europe will be for sale.

Tickets and more information can be found here.
