The Office of the Public Prosecutor in Charleroi requested a three-year prison sentence on Thursday for a man accused of threatening and harassing his mother.

The defendant, who is being held in Jamioulx, has not denied the accusation or the fact that he insulted a policewoman and damaged garden furniture at his mother’s home.

The man, who had just been released from prison, threatened and harassed his mother between 24 February and 21 May. “There were 47 missed calls on 20 May and a further 11 the following day,” the public prosecutor told the Charleroi Correctional Court. “Not to mention the many threatening messages.”

The accused considers his mother to be “his maid,” the deputy public prosecutor charged. “She has to give him money, cook for him and do his laundry. She is afraid of her son.”

The defendant did not deny defacing flower boxes and statuettes in his mother’s garden. “What would have happened if the victim had been present?” the prosecutor wondered.

The man also insulted a policewoman while being questioned.

“I’m ashamed of myself, I have no excuses,” the defendant said. “I’ve already done a lot of work on myself with psychological counselling in prison. I think that’s the only solution. I also have a problem with impulsiveness.”

A three-year prison sentence has been requested for the accused, who is a repeat offender with 13 previous convictions, including six for robbery with violence and five  for assault and battery.

The defence pleaded for a custodial sentence. Judgement is expected on 20 July.
