A 58-year-old woman from Lanaken, Limburg Province, was stabbed on Friday afternoon, reportedly by her 57-year-old former partner, who then jumped into the Zuid-Willem canal near Boorsem (Maasmechelen).
The man was pulled from the water by a team of fire brigade divers, but he had already died, the Limburg public prosecutor’s office said.
Local police had been called at around 2 p.m. to a knife fight. They discovered a lady with stab wounds. Her precise condition is not known. A witness then reported seeing a man jump into the canal at Boorsem.
Lab and investigation teams attended both scenes. They will have to determine whether there is a link between the stabbing and the drowning.
