At 23:00 Tuesday night a major fire broke out at Renewi, the recycling centre located in Wandre, Liège, causing a heavy release of smoke, the local fire brigade reported on Wednesday morning.
The population living in the vicinity was asked to stay indoors via the BE-Alert messaging system, and substantial resources have been deployed at the scene to overcome the flames.
In addition to the fire brigade, the civil protection and police are on site.
At around 08:00, a large amount of smoke was still visible for miles around, say the fire brigade, who are expected to keep crews at the plant for much of the day.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
